Dos and Don’ts: Taking Care of the Man

We recently collaborated with our friends at Hims, a men’s wellness and personal care company specializing in hair loss solutions. In the post below, they share some of their best tips for men’s personal care do’s and don’ts:

Every guy wants to feel and look their best, so it is up to them to establish a routine and commit to it. Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be hard. When it comes to men’s grooming there are certainly things that you should do—but also things that you should stay away from. We have put together a list of things to look out for:

Do:

Make sure to use a moisturizer that is compatible with your skin type. Moisturizers are crucial in improving your skin tone and texture. If you have any type of imperfection, they can act to conceal and repair. Most importantly, a good product will hold moisture on the outermost layer of skin, acting as a barrier. Wear it while you sleep if you have any concerns about having something on your face during the day. CLn Facial Moisturizer absorbs into the skin rapidly, is not greasy and reduces the appearance of redness. It is designed for all skin types so it is able to focus on locking in moisture with ingredients that are plant derived.

Don’t:

It is possible to over moisturize your skin. It can lead to clogged pores, blackheads and an oily complexion. It is important that you stick to what the label says to do when it comes to applying the product. Do not exceed the amount they suggest.

Do:

Getting out in the sun offers so many benefits; from improving mood and better sleep, to stronger bones and a healthier immune system. Make sure to wear a product containing SPF on a daily basis, especially when gaining sun exposure. This will help to protect your skin against the damaging effects of UV rays. It will also keep your skin looking younger and healthier while maintaining all of its natural benefits for your body and mind. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should opt for at least SPF 30 and make sure to apply 20 minutes before getting outdoors.

Don’t:

Just apply to your face. Over time, overexposure to the sun without protection can be quite damaging. It starts to break down the fibers in the skin called elastin. When this process happens, wrinkles and fine lines can begin to occur. Skin cancer is certainly not out of the conversation as well. Whereas many of these effects of not wearing sunscreen occur over longer periods of time, dried out skin and dark spots on the skin can occur much faster. The arms and neck are often areas that are forgotten about. Men’s grooming refers to the whole body.

Do:

Hair loss is an issue that can start much younger than you think; one in four men will begin to lose their hair by the age of 21. If you are beginning to notice that your hair is falling out, don’t panic. There are plenty of styles for thinning hair that should fit your face and head shape. Take the styles you have in mind and bring them to your barber. Have a conversation about what would look and work best for you. Get on a path of how you want your hair to look and figure out the types of cuts you should get.

Don’t:

Overuse hair care products to hide your hair loss. Gels and pomades often contain chemicals that can damage your hair and even be harmful to your scalp. Piling on product day after day can make your hair appear brittle, fine and unappealing for women to touch.

Do:

Working our regularly is great for your mental and physical health, but if you’re not taking proper measures to protect your skin post-workout, then your workouts could actually be compromising your health.  Breaking a sweat can exacerbate acne, and that’s often enough for folks to step up their skincare game. But beyond acne, regular exercise can also cause a wide range of skin infections that significantly impact your health and comfort. To avoid this cleanse within one hour using a high-quality skin cleanser This hour timeframe is important because it’s within this window that bacteria is easily sloughed off; wait any longer and the bacteria bind too strongly to your skin to be easily removed.

Don’t:

Since microbes are all around us and more so during exercise, we need to be diligent and follow some basic practices like, don’t leave your sweaty clothes on after working out, don’t share towels or razors, and avoid wearing tight clothes while working out because it increases the amount of friction on your skin which can cause tiny abrasions that could let bacteria in.
